Happy Veterans Day!
Did you know that Nov 11th is Veterans Day? It marks the first world war’s end date, Nov 11th, 1918. But what is a veteran, and are there any from WWI that are still alive? Also, what is this so-called “World War I” anyway?
To put it simply, a veteran is someone with lots of experience in something. This term is usually this used to describe people who once were in the military. Sadly, there isn't a veteran known to survive to today from the first global war. The last of these people ever known, Florence Green, an English woman and former member of the Royal Air Force, died on Feb 4th, 2012, at the age of 110.
These veterans all took part at some point in one of the largest and deadliest wars in history, WWI. Also known as “the war to end all wars”, this deadly war resulted in an estimated 9 million combatant deaths and 13 million civilian deaths. This means that those who have survived are actually quite rare, so we must remember them, the main reason we have Veterans Day.
I think you can dress up like a veteran, or maybe draw one, to celebrate this day, and honor those who have helped shape the present.
