Chinese Swimmer Sun Yang’s Eight-Year Doping Ban Overturned

As the postponed Tokyo Olympics, which will be held from July 23rd to August 8th in 2021, is coming closer, with around seven months to go, it’s a relief that 29-year-old Chinese swimmer Sun Yang has gotten his eight-year doping ban overturned.

Sun Yang–the first Chinese male swimmer to win Olympic gold–was accused of destroying a blood vial with a hammer when collectors visited his home in September of 2018 during an out-of-competition doping test. That resulted in an eight-year ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or CAS for short, in February. But the banning in question was overturned on Wednesday when a challenge from the swimmer’s lawyers against the chairman of the three panel judge handed down the original ruling.

“That’s good news for China because the odds are that he could win another gold in swimming,” said Tigger earlier today. “Let’s just hope he wouldn’t be banned again.”

That has been the New News Newsminute, thank you.
