It’s World Whale Day!
Whales are known mainly for their giant size and their weight. And did you know there’s also this World Whale Day?
This day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in Feb, or today, this year. Founded in Maui, Hawaii, in 1980, it honors humpback whales, which swim off its coast. Whales swarm Earth’s oceans, communicating with mysterious sounds. And their size is enormous, with a blue whale reaching lengths of more than 100 feet and can weigh up to 200 tons, the equivalent of almost 33 elephants! Even though living in water, whales breathe air, meaning they need to go up to the surface every then and now. Like humans, they are also warm-blooded, who nurse their young. The whale family includes many species, like the Narwhal, a creature with a unicorn-like spike on its head. There’s also the Beluga, with a giant bump on its head.
They are magnificent because each species is different from the other. But sadly, whales are endangered, though we could save them if we raise more awareness using World Whale Day. Tell your friends, and let your friends tell their friends. It’s time to save these whales, as well as other endangered species too!
