Today Is International Mother Language Day!

Today is, you guessed it, Feb 21st. What’s so special about that, you may ask, because it’s also International Mother Language Day!

Everyone has a mother language, no matter where you were born. In China, residents speak Chinese, and in the U.S., they speak mostly English. In Spain, their mother language is Spanish, and so on. And these mother languages are pretty important since they symbolize a civilization’s culture, ancient or modern. Some languages had been almost forgotten, like old Egyptian, until people found the Rosetta Stone and translated it. That was some time ago, though this day, International Mother Language Day, is more modern, gotten founded by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization on Nov 17th, 1999. Promoting “linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism,” the day encourages everyone to remember their language, as well as learning another language at the same time.

So don’t forget your language when learning other ones. You couldn’t communicate with your native people, which would be quite weird for you and them!
