Who Was Leifeng?
Do you remember about the Chinese NPC opening, which was yesterday? There was also an important day on March 5th, and that is Learn From Leifeng Day.
Leifeng, as probably all Chinese know of, was a Chinese soldier born in 1940. He grew up as an orphan since his family passed away one by one when he was young. Despite this, he served his country, joining the Communist Youth Corps as a child and the People’s Liberation Army, or PLA, as an adult. During his time in the PLA, Lei wrote a diary. He said that he wanted to be a “rust-proof screw of the revolution.” Lei donated his money to good causes and worked hard on collective farms. But tragically, he was crushed by a falling telephone pole. He was only 22 years old. After he died, Chair Mao called on the country to learn from the example of being selfless and noble in thought set by Leifeng.
Now, we remember him as a person who is willing to help others. Let his legacy be remembered forever by observing Learn From Leifeng Day!
