It’s World Water Day!
It’s something that is almost everywhere, covering about 75% of Earth’s surface, and we can’t live without it. It’s obvious: Water! But what we need is freshwater.
It may seem that freshwater can also get found anywhere. But in truth, only about 2.5% of Earth’s water is freshwater. And to make the resource more scarce, an estimate of only 31% is available to us, with the other 69% trapped in ice caps and glaciers, which equivalents to less than 1% of usable freshwater.
That is truly horrifying, but you could raise awareness about saving water by using this World Water Day today! It got adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Dec 22nd, 1992. UN-Water, the group that coordinates the UN’s work on sanitation and water, annually sets a theme for this day, with this year’s being valuing water.
So now you know how scarce freshwater is. But you can’t just go thirsty! Since you know the theme for 2021, then do it, and tell your friends too. Give yourself a goal. It’s time not to leave taps on, not pour the leftover water down the drain, not waste water anymore!
