Ever Given Blocks Suez Canal

One of the most famous and busiest waterways, the Suez Canal, has gotten blocked by the Ever Given, one of the largest container ships worldwide.

The ship from China to Rotterdam planned to enter from the Red Sea and travel through the 120-mile canal. However, it grounded to the bottom 3.7 miles from the southern entrance on Mar 23rd. About 10% of the world’s goods flow through the passage located in Egypt. A high wind possibly made the stacks of cargo mirror a sail and pushed the vessel, as long as the Empire State Building, off course, jamming it horizontally. As of 2020, nearly 19,000 ships passed through the canal, for an average of 51.5 per day, according to Suez Canal Authority.

The New News Newsminute hopes the ship can get moving quickly again. It’s not only the Ever Given that is halted, but a portion of global trade is too. According to canal authorities, up to 20,000 cubic meters of sand needs to get removed to free the ship. That is the end of today’s production. Thank you.
