Meow! The Cat On A Building

August 3, 2021422 words2 min read

“Is that a cat on that building? Well, it seems like one, and it’s quite alive.” You probably have seen a billboard, right? They could be a giant plastic covering with some ad on it. Or, it could be electric, a screen playing videos. However, in Tokyo, which is currently hosting the Olympics, this electric billboard of a cat will blow your mind.

Just go online and search “big 3D cat,” and you would see a cat standing high on a ledge curving into a building. Strange and impossible, right? No matter how real it looks, after a few seconds, common sense would take over and tell you that this couldn’t be what it seems. So how did this board give you this so realistic illusion? Tigger thinks that it’s simple. “It doesn’t need to be made through any 3D. It’s a cat, and cats are everywhere. You could record a cat and put it on a screen. There’s another billboard in South Korea that creates a giant wave in the middle of the city. These are all pretty cool, creating an ionic scene quite out of place. We have the video, and we play it on the board. But what’s happening on that board? If you’ve seen an auditorium screen up close, you would see many small round things popping up. From afar, these specks create a big image together by displaying various colors, like a puzzle with millions of pieces, putting together the final image. If those specks were bigger, then the screen would seem more chunky, with round edges not able to be displayed.”

Did these strange technologies fool you? What you see is just on the surface. Far below, things are keeping the whole world’s wheels turning. And our senses deceive us all the time, too. You think it’s a friend, but it isn’t. You think you saw something move in the background. When you look back, nothing’s there.

French philosopher René Descartes took all this to an extreme level, disbelieving everything to examine the world around him. But from “Cogito Ergo Sum,” that he must at least think, he builds back all his beliefs. So don’t worry. In the end, you’ll be able to know if you were deceived, like when you wake up from a dream. It’s the same with leveling up on a skill. Making mistakes means that you’ll be able to improve. That’s the end of this production from the New News Newsminute.
