Goodbye Facebook, Hello Meta!

In the modern world of the internet, there are also many tech giants controlling it. And one you might be familiar with, Facebook. Or should I say Meta?

If you’ve never heard of Facebook, Inc., it’s an American multinational tech company based in Menlo Park, California. It also owns the popular social media and social networking service, Facebook. However, that is all about to change since there will be no more Facebook. Meta will be there in its place.

Just days ago, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the change during the company’s virtual and augmented reality conference Facebook Connect. So why did they change the name? Well, here is where it gets a bit complicated. You see, months ago, Facebook decided to form a team to work on the metaverse. Made up of the prefix “meta” from the Greek word meaning “beyond” and the stem “verse” or “universe,” this is what many think is the future of the internet. It’s a place where people can interact digitally via avatars.

Zuckerberg said in a letter he hopes that the metaverse can reach a billion people in a decade, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers. Facebook will also change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, starting December 1st. The company is also getting a new logo, something similar to an infinity symbol. CEO Zuckerberg said that to him, it means that there is always more to build.

The infinity symbol, or “Mobius strip,” was used as a logo more than once before. And this strip is quite interesting, and you could even make one yourself! It’s a loop with an unusual property: You could draw all sides without moving the pen off it! All you need is a long strip of paper and some glue or double-sided tape. Give the strip a half twist, glue the ends together, and there you have it, your Mobius strip.

It’s interesting to make, and it sure makes a great logo. And just like a Mobius strip, all logos have something hidden inside them. No, not inside, but rather, a meaning, purpose, or just a fun fact. Take the FedEx logo as an example. Write it out with bold letters, connecting each letter side to side. Do you see something strange? There’s an arrow stuck in the middle of the letters “e” and “x”!

It’s the same with everything around you. Whether you can or cannot touch it or feel it, things all have a purpose. A table is for you to do work on, to eat on, etc. A bed is for sleeping. Your name is to identify you. And that purpose was given when the creator created it. So finding the meaning or use of something can make you do better at using it. You could even invent your own purposes for something. However, be careful with words. Some say that the pen is mightier than the sword. It only takes a few words to decide an important issue. A “yes” or “no” could sometimes be the only thing standing between war and peace. That’s the end of this production from the New News Newsminute. Thank you, and tune in next time for more updates. By the way, please share this article with your friends and family, or they might not know about Meta and still call it Facebook!
