Happy 2nd Birthday to New News!

April 5, 2022484 words2 min read

We made it! And that’s to say: It’s the 2nd anniversary of the newspaper! In today’s edition, we’re going to dive into a summary of the last year of New News, but before we get into that, I’m sure there are a lot of readers wanting the answer to why is the newspaper called New News.

It all started two years ago when the pandemic started. People were panicking, and schools were closed. It was on April 5th, 2020, and I sat down with a piece of printer paper. I had an idea to hand-draw my newspaper! No, it was not me who had that idea. I got it from Henry, a fictional character in a fictional book that I happened to be reading at that time. He printed a newspaper, competing with his arch-enemy, Margaret. After I drew the layout, there was another problem. But what would it be called? I deleted the letter “s” from “news,” and tada! When I gave it the name “New News,” it meant a new newspaper, which was true enough. However, it also meant having accurate info, “new!” And that’s how this newspaper came to be.

After one year of writing the newspaper, restrictions got slightly lessened, schools opened, and there was homework. So the newspaper couldn’t get written daily anymore. And that was when the newspaper turned into a weekly edition, usually published on Mondays. I’ll note that I have changed my writing perspective. Before the newspaper turned weekly, I couldn’t write too much in one edition, since tomorrow I had to write too, and there wasn’t that much time. After it changed to weekly, I could write more about each topic, with a deeper analysis that would be more helpful for readers like you to understand. In recent weeks, the newspaper mainly included things about the current war in Ukraine and about how Russia is getting sanctioned. In the last month, Russia has become the number-one sanctioned country globally. That’s because leaders of countries like the United States became enraged with Russia invading Ukraine, announcing sanctions by the dozens, hoping to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop invading.

Other topics I have written about include climate change and extreme weather (and a show called the Climate Change Show); Sports (when the Beijing Winter Olympics took place); Covid-19; Space exploration; Economics; International politics; etc.

Over a year of writing this newspaper, I’ve learned things that I never thought I would know, for example, the economic principle of supply and demand. And by writing this newspaper, I also have new thoughts about the world, like how urgent climate change is. And I hope that you, dear reader, have also learned new things about the world by looking at the news, New News. That’s the end of this special 2nd-anniversary edition. And as always, thank you for reading and supporting this newspaper. Happy birthday to New News!
