If you’ve read the latest headlines, you would know about the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which has just concluded its work. Today, we’re looking at key takeaways from this week-long congress.

This congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) got attended by about 2,300 delegates, representing even more CPC members from all over the country. The CPC National Congress is held every five years at the Great Hall of the People in China’s capital, Beijing. At the end of every conference, a resolution gets passed that lays out the new groundwork for development in the next five years. It is an important event, as that five-year plan is crucial in catching up and surpassing Western countries’ technological and economic advancements.

It is hard to deny that, in the more than 100 years since its founding, the CPC has helped rebuild a China that got crippled by fighting and wars, famine, and poverty. Just after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was comparably one of the poorer countries in the world. However, that gradually changed. Like how the country had endured many hardships before, slowly, China began to rebuild its infrastructure and started leaning toward industrialization. Rebuilding the living conditions of the people was the most important, as crops and land of the local people got destroyed by intense fighting. Under the CPC reformation, in a few decades, China was a country with a strong economy that mostly eradicated extreme poverty.

So how does the CPC work, and how has that system helped China prosper? As mentioned before, the 2,300 or so delegates that attended the 20th CPC National Congress only represented a small part of the larger, much bigger whole of all the CPC members from every corner of China. Of those 2,300 delegates, they select 380 of their own to become members of the Central Committee. A handful of Central Committee members get picked to join the Politburo. There are 25 individuals in the Politburo, though that number mostly depends on the leader’s decision. Furthermore, a few get selected from the Politburo to the Standing Committee, which currently consists of 7 people. The most important member of the Standing Committee is the General Secretary, Xi Jinping, the party’s top leader and current President of China.

Since its founding, the CPC has been committed to its goal to help China make more advancements and become a global leader. But some Western critics question China’s one-party governance. However, since China’s first unification millennia ago, it has taken on at least a kind of one-party rule and was a far better-governed country, more peaceful and prosperous than the situation of European states. China began to lag behind Europe because it missed the Industrial Revolution that happened in the 18th century. But China is quickly catching up and is predicted to surpass other Western countries in the next decade.

Every year, China makes new advancements and research in different fields. At the 20th CPC National Congress, delegate Wu Yansheng, Chairman of China Aerospace Science and Technology, expressed his confidence in China making more breakthroughs in the space sector. Wu said that after completing construction on China’s space station at the end of this year, China’s space advancement plans would include operating staffed missions to the moon, etc.

What are your predictions for the future of the People’s Republic of China? Let’s hope that development accelerates even faster and that more new advancements lie in wait for the country.
