Hello, 2023!
Happy New Year, dear reader, because it’s now 2023! Today, we’re looking back on 2022 and what to expect in 2023.
2022 was full of setbacks and hardship, with the Covid-19 pandemic mostly to blame for many of the year’s problems. However, it was also a year of change, with students switching to online classrooms and many people working virtually from home. New records got set, like the online sales on Black Friday. And there are the dominant headline news stories, which I have listed below, starting with what I think are the most significant.
In 2022, the political landscape for many countries was quite rocky, with some holding elections. The United Kingdom went through 3 prime ministers in less than a year. First, Boris Johnson resigned after a backlash from alleged scandals. Liz Truss replaced him, though she stepped down after just 44 days in office, being replaced by Rishi Sunak. Meanwhile, The United States House of Representatives experienced a change from Democratic control into the hands of Republicans.
Throughout 2022, I’m sure that you’ve heard updates about the war in Ukraine. In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in Ukraine, sending troops into the country. In response, many countries imposed sanctions on Russia. And the effects of which could get felt around the world.
It was because of various reasons, including the war in Ukraine, that the global economy experienced a nightmare in 2022. There are problems like global supply chain disruptions and price hikes. The U.S. economy took a hard hit, with the Federal Reserve Bank furiously raising interest rates throughout the year.
Turning to more positive events in 2022, it was a year of historic scientific innovation, with U.S. scientists making a breakthrough in nuclear fusion technology and Chinese astronauts completing the Shenzhou-14 mission to the Chinese Tiangong Space Station. NASA also accomplished the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, which used a small spacecraft to hit an asteroid off course.
Furthermore, the technological sector continuously received news of the deal between Elon Musk and Twitter throughout 2022. Earlier that year, Musk announced he wanted to own the popular social media platform for $44 billion. Then he pulled out of the deal, only to reverse that decision and ultimately acquire the company.
Other events happened in 2022, like Beijing hosting the Winter Olympics and becoming the first city to host both the Winter and Summer Olympics. Qatar hosted the World Cup, becoming the first Middle East country to do so.
However, 2022 also contained many heartbreaking events. The second longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in September at 96, marking the end of a 70-year-long era. The Brazilian soccer star Pelé died in December at 82. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died from an assassin’s bullet in July. There were also many more losses of life that continue to be mourned by their communities and the world.
In conclusion, 2022 was a year that many are glad to forget. Speaking of leaving it behind, what could we expect in 2023? Whatever you’re planning for this new year, we should always think of an optimistic future.
Indeed, more setbacks and hurdles are yet to come in 2023, but learning from the last few years in the pandemic, I’m confident we’ll live through it together. Covid may not be gone, the war in Ukraine may continue, and our problems persist. However, there is something superior to them all, which is hope. Hope has brought people together in the past and will also be so in the future. Going into 2023, everyone should have hope and daringly face the setbacks life throws at us. Let us walk into a better and brighter future! That’s the end of this production from the New News Newsminute. Thank you for reading, and I wish you a Happy New Year.
