Classified Documents Found In Biden Home & Former Office
Just as investigations into classified documents found at U.S. former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate started cooling down, the Department of Justice has something new to look into: Classified documents turned over by current President Biden’s legal team.
These classified documents allegedly were from when Joe Biden was at the White House as Vice President under the Obama administration. They got found at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, in an office Biden used to work. The National Archives and Records Administration was notified and took the documents into possession the following day. Later, Biden’s lawyers reported another batch of classified documents found in the garage of one of Biden’s Delaware homes.
Following the reveal of these documents, Republicans have slammed Biden, saying he “must be held accountable.” It looks like Biden’s words on the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago came back to haunt him. Speaking of Mar-a-Lago, what are the differences between the Trump and Biden cases?
Well, for starters, it’s the number of documents. The Federal Bureau of Investigation recovered hundreds of classified materials from Trump’s club, while the number found at Biden’s office and home are in the dozens.
Then there’s the fact of accidental versus purposeful possession of these documents. The United States government classifies its most sensitive material on three levels, confidential, secret, and top secret. These are things that, being leaked, could threaten U.S. national security. And that’s why purposeful and accidental possession of such documents are different.
As one expert put it, classified material could get clipped to something not classified, which, after someone leaves office, takes with them, not knowing what it is. That could be the case for Biden, though it’s still too early in the investigation to tell. However, in the Trump case, it must have been purposefully done, as you can’t take boxes of classified stuff without knowing what you’re doing.
The third difference is how the documents got found. The material in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was found during an FBI raid, while Biden’s legal team turned over the documents willingly. That may put the current president on a more innocent side than Trump, but there’s still one factor, and that’s time.
Biden’s lawyers revealed the documents just after the midterm elections, making many conclude that Biden purposefully held back until after the midterm results came out. So did Biden read any of the classified material after leaving office? We still do not know.
Even with all this information, we’re only scraping the tip of the iceberg. The detective’s magnifying glass has changed hands as Republicans take control of the House of Representatives. From a 2-year-long investigation into Trump, his businesses, and the January 6th Capitol riot led by Democrats into a chance for Republicans to investigate the Biden administration, it looks like the U.S. is in for another wave of political struggle between the two parties.
