WWDC23: The Latest From Tech Giant Apple

Apple Inc. It’s one of the most recognizable brand names in the world. And there’s a fair chance that you or someone you know owns an Apple product. And recently, Apple released its new range of products and software at the Worldwide Developers Conference for 2023 (WWDC23). Today, we’re looking at what got announced at this event and the potential effects of these new developments on the market and everyday users.

But before we jump in, here’s some more context. Apple Inc., formally Apple Computers Inc., is an American tech company founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. It makes everything the everyday person needs: the iPhone (smartphone), Apple Watch (smartwatch), Mac (laptops & computers), Airpods (headphones), iPad (tablet), and a whole lot of other accessories. The company currently dominates a substantial percentage of the markets it participates in. So how did it become so successful? The first product ever made by Apple was the Apple I personal computer, which changed the public view from a room-sized machine for scientific use to a home appliance easily usable by anyone. That idea of revolutionizing the market later became the norm for Apple. After entering the smartphone market in 2007 with the iPhone and in 2015 with the Apple Watch, the products quickly dominated its market. So it’s not a surprise that after the company went public in 1980, it took off as a huge financial success.

So that leads us to the Worldwide Developers Conference. The conference is where Apple announces its latest “market-shocker,” and a place where third-party developers can attend sessions with the Apple engineers themselves. However, it’s usually not the thing announced at these events that rattle competitors and everyday users alike. It has more to do with the famous Apple ecosystem, something that many rivals have failed to duplicate, and combined with its revolutionary products, makes Apple hard to beat. This ecosystem can be as simple as the iPhone and the Apple Watch. The iPhone can do all everyday tasks, from phone calls to transactions to browsing internet content. But put together with the Apple Watch, it increases your phone’s functionality, as now you can monitor health data like heart rate and by taking phone calls right from your wrist. That’s how by buying one, the buyer usually gets compelled to buy the other, and with that, Apple secures one more user and succeeds in sales.

And at WWDC23, that idea of a much more pleasurable user experience got even more cemented. That brings us to what got announced at that conference. Here are the main things. On software, there were the newest operating systems: IOS 17 (for iPhone)[1], iPadOs 17 (for iPad)[2], WatchOs 10 (for Apple Watch)[3], and macOS Sonoma (for Mac)[4]. If you own an Apple device, you can now enrol for beta testing for these new software systems and get the chance to preview the latest software. Though I should note there isn’t much “new” stuff in any of those updates; Virtually all of the new features are improvements to the user experience. Many apps have got redesigned, for example, a broader and more screen-filling weather app for the Apple Watch. Even though I can’t cover all the details in this article, I have linked the official Apple articles so you can find out more if you’re interested.

Moving on from the software released at WWDC23, here are the actual products released at the conference: A 15” Macbook Air, with one of Apple’s fastest running chips inside, the M2. This MacBook has an increased screen size from the previous 13” models. However, the most important announcement at WWDC this year was the release of Apple Vision Pro. It’s an augmented reality headset that integrates many technologies from the company’s other products. For example, the “Digital Crown” from the Apple Watch gets used to customize how much reality blends with the virtual world. The Vision Pro gets framed by many enthusiasts as the next iPhone and the start of a new spatial computing era. People who have tried out this product say it is more comfortable fitting than those manufactured by competitors like Meta. Apple says it’s both easy to use and has a high resolution for both eyes. It has all the functionality of an iPhone (including the apps), has a brand-new operating system (VisionOs), and makes a great theatre. However, with all that, it doesn’t come cheap; It will sell for a whopping $3500.

So how will this new Apple version of a mixed-reality headset compete with existing ones? The AR and VR headsets market is relatively new, so even the old players like Meta still have a lot to figure out how a product best appeals to users. Apple has a history of waiting some time to enter a particular market and bringing with it a game-changer product that combines the successes of competitors and Apple’s innovations, for example, on software, to make it more user-friendly. It was the case with iPhone and the Apple Watch, and it could be the case yet again with the Apple Vision Pro. However, we may have to wait until the beginning of 2024 to see this headset hit the stores, as Apple is currently awaiting approval from U.S. government agencies to sell the product.

All in all, here’s how I would summarize WWDC23 and Apple’s stance overall. Apple historically has made its products both as simplistic and easy to use as possible, and even though sometimes it will bring dismay to customers, in the long run, Apple has driven the global market time and time again in the right direction. And I should admit that I am an Apple user, as this article got typed on a MacBook. Linking up all my devices, from iPad to iPhone to Apple Watch and MacBook, makes them more productive and convenient. One example of that is the Continuity features of Apple devices. I can link my iPad with my Mac and navigate them all using one trackpad and keyboard, turning the iPad into a great second display. There’s also the option of linking your iPhone’s back camera through Continuity Camera to your Mac during a video call, further improving video resolution.

So what do you think about Apple? Are you an Apple user? Post your thoughts in the comments. That’s the end of this production from the New News Newsminute. Thank you for reading, and remember to subscribe to not miss out on the latest.
