Negative Numbers & Arithmetic

Idea 1: Communicative Property = Add or multiply numbers in any order

e.g. 4*5=5*4

four groups of five = five groups of four

e.g. 4+6=6+4

four plus six = six plus four

Idea 2: Distributive Property

e.g. (x+2)(x+5)=x2+7x+10 «« unknowns inside because its algebra!

Idea 3: Integers = all positive/negative whole numbers

Basic Facts About Integers.

Negative * Negative = Positive

Positive * Negative = Negative

Positive * Positive = Positive

Why?

“-” and “-” cancel out, equaling a positive.
