Many young people today struggle with mental health issues such as stress and anxiety. What are the causes of this problem, and what solutions can you suggest?

There has been a growing concern that more teens and young adults are struggling with mental health issues. Here are some possible causes on why this is the status quo, and how we can possibly change it.

The current consequence is no doubt a result of multiple factors compiled together, and I believe it can be partly contributed to social media and so-called ‘influencers’. These online celebrities have a growing influence on today’s youth, and also the cause of concern, as they have been associated with promoting perfect body image, lifestyles, etc. Lots of youth look up to these people as role models, however, they often don’t recognize perfection isn’t always achievable, causing them to enter a negative spiral of hopelessness versus expectation. These young individuals are also the constant target of other people’s expectations, including their peers, parents, teachers, and superiors. In an age where more are competing for limited jobs and opportunities, young people are subjected to amounting stress, which can also possibly contribute to the status quo.

However, this isn’t necessarily a disease without a cure. Although growing mental health problems can be quite negative both to the victims themselves and their families, through mental therapy and a comforting and respecting environment created by others, these people can again have faith in themselves, and slowly reenter society as a more confident person. In addition, actively requiring tech companies to control their content and promote mental health can be a great way to turn a problem into its own solution. Alternatively, from the parents’ standpoint, we should actively care for our children’s mental health, and providing much needed support to them when needed.

In conclusion, although the status quo isn’t promising, there are ways to mitigate its effects.
