The rise of online shopping has transformed the way people buy goods. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?
The trend of shopping digitally has revolutionized consumer behaviour. This practice has created both significant benefits and drawbacks.
There are several benefits to online shopping.
Buying products from a diverse supply chain is very convenient to consumers; it’s possible to order something from halfway across the globe and have it delivered to your doorstep through international shipping.
Online shopping has also helped lower prices, putting less strain on individuals’ wallets. This is possible because buyers can easily compare prices from different sellers side by side, become aware of markups, and choose the more affordable option, all without having to leave the comfort of their home.
However, this trend has also brought about undesired disadvantages.
Notably, the quality of products cannot be guaranteed when shopping on digital platforms, as buyers cannot see, smell, taste, or physically touch the product. Some vendors take advantage of this fact to conduct sketchy schemes such as drop-shipping or straight-up scamming the consumer.
Furthermore, as shopping digitally lacks physicality, it can result in consumers buying more than expected. When in a physical store, the things you buy take up space and weight, making people constantly aware of the amount they’re buying. However, shopping online doesn’t have that corresponding awareness, leading individuals to spend more than they actually need, causing unnecessary waste.
In summary, although shopping online has no doubt positively influenced consumer behaviour, it also has undesired drawbacks.
