Food Tests

Preparing the sample (in order):

Take the food

Mash/break/crush it up

Dissolve it in water

Filter out the solid parts

Ready to use

Benedict’s Test (Sugars):

Two kinds of sugars: Reducing & non-reducing

Only works for the former

Process:

5cm3 of sample + 10 drops * Benedict’s Solution

Put it inside 75 degree water bath

Wait for five minutes

If still blue (no sugars), if green, yellow or red (sugars present)

Iodine Test (Starch):

5cm3 of sample + Iodine Solution

Shake shake

Blue-black color = starch present

Biuret Test (Proteins):

2cm3 of sample + 2cm3 of Biuret solution

Shake shake

If pink/purple (proteins present), if blue (no protein).

Sudan III Test (Lipids):

5cm3 of non filtered sample + 3 drops * Sudan III solution

Shake shake

If red layer on top = lipids present
